Inspiring Curiosity, Problem-Solving & Discovery

Science education builds the curiosity and critical thinking students need to understand the world and thrive as informed citizens. Iowa AEAs partner with schools, districts, and community partners to strengthen science teaching and learning through targeted, high-impact support. Our science consultants help schools deliver engaging, equitable, and standards-aligned science instruction by providing:

  • Professional learning, instructional coaching, and curriculum design to strengthen coherence across grade levels and courses.
  • Support for implementing the Iowa Academic Standards for Science, ensuring all students have access to high-quality, phenomenon-based learning.
  • Guidance on creating authentic, inquiry-driven learning experiences that connect science to literacy, mathematics, and engineering.
  • Assistance in reviewing, selecting, and implementing High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) and standards-aligned programs.
  • Collaboration on developing assessment systems that measure three-dimensional learning – disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices.

Supporting All Learners

AEA science consultants help educators make science accessible and meaningful for every student. This includes providing targeted support for at-risk learners, English learners, Gifted and Talented students, and those with IEPs. Consultants also help schools design learning progressions and use formative and summative assessments that reflect students’ ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world contexts.

Our Focus

Through this focused, evidence-based approach, Iowa AEAs empower educators to design and deliver science experiences that are rigorous, inclusive, and deeply engaging—cultivating lifelong curiosity and understanding.
